The hall intended for temporary exhibits coincides with a vaulted rectangular space marked by a series of pillars at street level (smaller, irregularly shaped rooms near the lobby will be used as service areas).
The project aims to combine conservation requirements with flexibility of use by furnishing the exhibition spaces with non-invasive technological systems. A section of the space in the Vicolo dell’Oro, historically closed with gates in the arches below the Scalone della Magliabechiana (Magliabechiana Grand Staircase) and in the buttress wall, was reconceived to become an essential feature of the new exhibition complex. In this protected area, a new lobby was designed to provide access to temporary exhibitions. This structure, enclosed above by a steel-and-glass roof, is a simple, serene, rectangular space, illuminated by natural external light for its entire height.
The result is the creation of a natural pause in the flow of visitors to the Uffizi Gallery and temporary exhibitions.
