The goal of this project was the restoration of a large complex of structures with enormous importance in terms of history, architecture, and natural beauty in order to convert them into a luxury five-star hotel with 120 guestrooms.
By re-opening passageways in the boundary wall that separated the Giardino della Gherardesca Garden from Del Nero Park, the Palazzo della Gherardesca and the former Suor Maria Riparatrice Institute were connected. The result was a large, unified, and well-articulated complex. All common spaces were joined at street level, while the remaining building space was dedicated entirely to guest rooms and suites. The three buildings of the Ionic greenhouse (orangerie) house fitness and wellness services as well as a pool.
A new underground area, outfitted with large light wells, provides space for kitchens and other staff areas. Rebuilding involved reinforcement of existing structures and, in particular, improvement of energy efficiency.
