Through a delicate and exacting effort involving high-tech architecture and engineering, the master architectural plan lent additional substance to the museum’s objectives in pursuit of the most appropriate technical solutions for the project’s goals: doubling of exhibition space in the museum through the extension of the gallery into the building’s main floor; an increase in accessibility and public appreciation of these new spaces through the transfer of the Italian State Archive and the display of works not previously accessible to the public in a more thoughtful and prudent layout; and the transformation of the Vasari complex into a whole that seamlessly integrates function and use.

Taken as a whole, work on the Vasari complex proceeded according to the museum-based project with specific choices designed to take into account the requirements of restoration and the need for functional reorganization of the spaces. With the expansion of the exhibition areas on the main floor and the creation of a new exit from the museum, all the services directly connected to the museum were reconceived. Study areas, laboratories, storage space, and service areas for staff and the public were all redistributed according to a more appropriate layout. The significant opportunity provided by the drafting of a project that involved the entire Vasari complex also led to an approach that was able to break with existing historical style and design.
